Tools 2D Regions Tool Command

The Regions Tool command brings up the Region List dialog box for the creation/selection/deletion of 2D window regions. The regions may be POLYGON, RECTANGLE or ELLIPSE. The regions, once defined, may be selected as logical gates or used to identify subsets in other displays.

To create a new region (R1, for example), click on the desired region ID in the Region List Dialog box. Then, select Polygon, Rectangle, or Ellipse from the list box. Click Create to dismiss the Region List dialog box and bring up the Window Tool dialog box that remains on the screen while the user draws and defines the region within the active display window. The Window Tool has slider bars to aid in moving and sizing regions. Once completed, the region is actually defined by clicking on the OK button. Selected regions may be deleted by clicking Delete in either dialog box.

A POLYGON is drawn by using the left mouse button to create, point by point, the polygon with each click of the left button selecting a screen point. The Polygon is closed by clicking in the small rectangle framing the first point. The region tool then connects up the last defined point to the first point.

A RECTANGLE or ELLIPSE is simply created by using the left mouse button to select the upper left screen corner for the region and dragging the cursor to the desired lower right screen corner and releasing the mouse button. The Region Tool sets either the RECTANGLE to the defined corners, or inscribes an ELLIPSE within the user defined rectangle.

All three region types, once activated by double clicking within the region, may be moved by first selecting the region by clicking the left mouse button with the cursor over the desired region, and then dragging the region to a new position. Releasing the left mouse button sets the new region position. The best way to create a new ELLIPSE, for example, is to click and drag to create the desired size and shape. Then, release the left button and immediately select the region and drag it the desired location in the display.

In Version 2.7 on, the histogram regions are easier to work with.
